Kimberly Joki

Student Profile: Kimberly Joki

Kimberly Joki was always interested in a career in civil service. As a public affairs fellow at Alma College she has traveled twice to Mexico and has an internship with Michigan Gov. Granholm.

“Through participation in the public affairs program I was given a solid foundation that has been an asset in all my work,” the Greenville senior says.

“For my internship, I am utilizing skills and knowledge garnered through the program. I know it will translate into my career because I use that skill set each day.”

Joki’s internship with the governor’s education policy advisor gives her a variety of hands-on experiences.

She tracks legislation and research relevant to the governor's priorities, attends meetings and has been assigned various projects.

“I think one of the greatest features of the public affairs program is that it provides a bridge between theory and reality,” she says.

“Though public affairs classes are taught rather traditionally, they are very exciting and motivating due largely to their overwhelming relevance.”

Her internship at an elder center and independent field work in Peru and Mexico have prepared her for a career in international service. She is considering attending a dual degree program studying international relations and international criminal law.

Attracted to Alma by the faculty-student interaction and community, she is involved in the Center for Responsible Leadership, Posey Global, the Forgotten Children of Eastern Europe student organization, Model United Nations, College Chorale and College Democrats. She also is active in student congress and school government.
