Faculty Profile: Dr. Jamie Smith
Assistant Professor of history Jamie Smith started teaching at Alma in 2006 but came back in the fall of 2007 with a new title – Dr. Jamie Smith.
She was working on her dissertation at the University of Toronto when she was hired in 2006 and completed it in the summer of 2007.
During Smith’s time as an undergraduate at Colby College, a professor interested her in medieval and early modern European history. It has been her research interest ever since.
“As the oldest child, I have always been a teacher,” she says, “and this professor took me under her wing and told me I would be a professor.”
The students are Smith’s favorite part of teaching at Alma, she says, and she appreciates how many opportunities they have at Alma.
“The students here are willing to learn,” she says. “The reward is tremendous, because I get to see the students really grow.”
In her spare time, Smith enjoys the outdoors and reading.
