Study Abroad in India
Goals and Tasks:
There are three major goals for this internship program. One is to experience an eight week employment situation in the field of education with the direction and supervision of a professional educator. Secondly, interns will have the opportunity to reflect on their vocation as it relates to the experience. Finally, interns will broaden their horizons with the international experience of the colors, spices, flora, and peeoples of the Kerala region.
Students will engage in specific tasks including observing, aiding, and teaching appropriate to their curricular and grade level area. They are encouraged to travel and become acquainted with India's rich culture, and will return to the US prepared to share their experiences with Alma College faculty and peers. A typical day might include lesson preparations, acting as classroom teacher aides, grading student work, talking with students, and reflecting on their experiences.
Why India?
The India Internship will center on the Mathen Mappilai Memorial Public School in the village of Ayroor in the state of Kerala. Ayroor, about 50 miles inland on India's southwest tip, offers a rich array of resources and opportunities:
- a society rooted in their ancient heritage and grounded in family life yet in the midst of modernization;
- an artistic and highly literate culture in which English is widely spoken alongside Southern India's native language Malayalam;
- religious diversity and tolerance amongst Christian, Hindu, Moslem, and Buddhist believers;
- stunning environmental beauty and diversity with tropical greenery, coastal backwaters, and breathtaking mountain ranges.
