Education Service Learning Opportunities
The education department provides its students with many opportunities for service learning. The following courses have a service learning component: EDC 183, EDC 282, EDC 346, EDC 348, EDC 440, EDC 490/491, and more. Through these courses, students are able to participate in activities that get them more involved with their community. As well as offering many service learning courses, the education department plans alternative break trips to Chicago and Philadelphia.
These trips are provided at little or no cost to
students, and provide students the opportunity to immerse themselves
into different cultures and school systems. They tour
African-American, Asian, and Hispanic ethnocenric schools, as well as
preschools centered around different models. These models include
Reggio Emilia, Montessori, and Head Start. Students volunteer in
a variety of school systems, as well as low-SES neighborhood
schools. Expanding students' understanding of teaching in
different school settings, these alternative breaks also provide
students the opportunity to learn through serving others.
