Student Profile: Kyle Travis

Kyle Travis came to Alma his freshman year with no interest in Economics. The first class of his college career changed that forever.

“The topics discussed and the way in which Associate Professor James Mueller conducted his classes sparked my desire for continued knowledge on the subject,” the Shepherd junior says.

A double major in economics and business administration, he hopes to pursue a career in the securities industry as a stock broker, managing retirements and saving accounts in the stock market. He says his Alma education is crucial for his career.

“This subject helps me to be able to understand the functions of the economy and how it affects the markets both internationally and on the domestic side,” he says. “It helps me to know why markets move the way they do and how to prepare for the future, judging by the past.”

Travis has been working with various Alma alumni in the field to build his knowledge and create business contacts. He has job-shadowed 1971 graduate Alan Otis and plans on interning in his office for a summer. He also traveled to meet 1980 graduate Steve Boff and toured the headquarters of his company.

The captain of the Alma College Men’s Golf Team, Travis was selected to the All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association second team. In addition to playing golf, Travis chose to attend Alma because of the College’s atmosphere and people.

He also is the president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (a social fraternity), and a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon (an honorary economics fraternity), Order of Omega (scholastic inter-fraternal affairs) and S.I.F.E. (Students in Free Enterprise).
