Dr. Jeffrey Sevener

Graduate Profile: Dr. Jeffrey Sevener

Jeffrey D. Sevener knew he wanted to pursue health care, but Alma’s pre-professional advising and liberal arts education helped him succeed in dental school.

“The fact that Alma had a pre-professional curriculum set to make sure that the required admissions criteria for the various professional schools were taken care of made it easy to pursue courses outside my major which interested me,” the 1992 graduate says.

It truly speaks of the value of a liberal arts education to explore all fields, whether or not they are in your intended major.

“It truly speaks of the value of a liberal arts education to explore all fields, whether or not they are in your intended major, and the guidance of my pre-professional advisor kept me on track,” he says.

The biology major was attracted to Alma by its size and academic reputation. He didn’t realize the full extent of his Alma education until he started dental school.

“I met students from many other schools who had never had input or access to their advisor, had never done independent research as an undergraduate, as I had done in my senior year, and had never achieved a degree because they were scrambling to get their required courses done after two years of undirected course taking,” he says.

While at Alma, he was involved in the Sigma Chi fraternity, Orientation Committee and theater and was an admission volunteer.

Alma students can explore the environmental wonders of the Galapagos Islands, practice Spanish language skills, study Ecuadorian culture, complete coursework in business finance, and fulfill a South American internship in entrepreneurship through Alma College's one-of-a-kind partnership with Equatorialis University in Quito, Ecuador.
