Janell Twietmeyer

Graduate Profile: Janell Twietmeyer

Janell Twietmeyer is able to assess her patients on a broader level as a physician’s assistant because of her Alma College education and exercise and health science major.

“For example, when speaking with a patient I have a knowledge not only of the human body and the mechanics of it but also of proper exercise habits, the benefits of exercise and proper nutritional habits,” the 2003 graduate says.

You aren't only learning about the body and its processes but you also learn about how to maintain health. Having these areas of knowledge add up to being a good healthcare provider.

She now works for Sparrow Hospital in Lansing as an emergency department physician assistant.

“You aren’t only learning about the body and it’s processes but you also learn about how to maintain health. Having these areas of knowledge add up to being a good healthcare provider,” she says.

The Spanish minor wanted to go into medicine but knew nothing about the physician assistant profession until Dr. Karen Ball introduced it in her junior year.

She hopes to travel to South America for medical mission trips.

Attracted to Alma by the small class sizes and personal interaction with faculty, she played for the women’s basketball team and was involved in the student athletic advisory committee.

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.
