Dr. Randy U'Ren

Graduate Profile: Dr. Randy U’Ren

Randy S. U’Ren, OD. knew he wanted to go into health care. He was attracted to Alma for its focus on individual attention and high rate of placement into professional school.

After graduating in 1999 Dr. U’Ren attended the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University. He now co-owns an optometry practice in Suttons Bay.

“There are other good schools out there, but Alma just had that intangible ’atmosphere’ that made things so much more fun and conducive to excelling,” he says. “My professors at Ferris said they could always tell the students from Alma because we were ready from day one to learn new and challenging concepts and apply them to overall patient care.”

U’Ren majored in chemistry and appreciated the pre-professional advising offered because it allowed him to see all the opportunities in the health care field.

“In optometry, you have to have a strong knowledge base in chemistry, biology and physics,” he says. “So it was a combination of all of those classes, as well as the ability to learn that a liberal arts education requires, that helped me succeed in optometry school.”

While at Alma, he played soccer and he now coaches the Suttons Bay boys’ varsity soccer team. He was also involved in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, presidential service group and the student athletic advisory committee.

Alma College students report levels of educational experiences and faculty interaction that exceed the national norms by significant amounts, according to the findings of the 2007 National Survey of Student Engagement. In the 2006 study, Alma students reported a level of interaction with faculty that ranked among the top five percent in the nation.
