“Most of us got our scuba certification before arriving in Hawaii, so we went scuba diving every single day while we were there,” she says. “We studied the fish and learned about their different characteristics. I would go back in a heartbeat if I could.”

The 2012 graduate explored the depths of Alma College, where she continues to take advantage of the opportunities offered. Smith says through the biology department, in particular, she has learned and discovered a lot.
“Science has always been interesting to be, but it really hit me these past few semesters how much I love learning biology,” she says. “I’m taking a lot of general requirements for graduation, and it has made me really miss biology.”
Inspired by her experience in Hawaii, Smith plans to establish a Scuba Diving Club on campus. She also is focusing her plans after graduation by applying to optometry schools.
“The eye is amazing, and there are so many components to it,” she says. “Vision is such a major part of living, so if I can, I want to help improve people’s lives.”
