Sara Swanton

Student Profile: Sara Swanton

Sara Swanton didn’t realize she wanted to be a doctor when she came to Alma College, but her exercise and health science major cemented the decision.

“Alma was great because the EHS program was so unique that going into college undecided would still offer me enough options,” the Saginaw junior says. “When I have to take some of these same classes in medical school at a higher level I know I will already be ahead of other students because I have been introduced to the material.”

Swanton was attracted to Alma by the liberal arts education and the individualized attention from professors.

It is as though the faculty are here for no other purpose than helping you to succeed. The support and encouragement from them, and other students in the program, is amazing.

“The faculty at Alma College are exceptional,” she says. “It is as though they are here for no other purpose than helping you to succeed. The support and encouragement from them, and other students in the program, is amazing.”

Another benefit of the program for Swanton is the opportunity to conduct research with faculty, especially in the human cadaver lab.

“The performance lab and the anatomy lab are unique experiences I could not have gotten anywhere else, and conducting undergraduate research is a great tool when applying to professional and graduate school,” she says.

A member of the varsity swim team, the EHS honorary and a resident assistant, Swanton hopes to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology.

Alma College is among the 10 percent of all colleges and universities in the nation to hold membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.
