Graduate Profile: Joel Kimball
Joel Kimball was attracted to psychology by the wide variety of opportunities within the field. In fact, a wide variety of opportunities was what attracted him to Alma College.
“The scientific rigor of psychology at Alma gives a very disciplined and data-driven approach, along with exceptional faculty,” the 1988 graduate says. “I was attracted to Alma by the opportunity to participate in many different activities while in school, as well as the quality of the liberal arts curriculum, faculty and size.”
Kimball now works as a human resources manager for the Ford Motor Company and feels a direct link from his major to his profession.
“The scientific rigor of psychology at Alma gives a very disciplined and data-driven approach, along with exceptional faculty.”
“There’s a pretty direct application of the statistics and research methods I experienced in the curriculum,” he says, “as well as application of psychology process disciplines to business processes such as employee development, retention, compensation planning and negotiations.”
Alma College stands out to Kimball on a number of levels, including the opportunity to engage in research with faculty and the hands-on experience in the classroom.
In addition, the leadership opportunities and vast involvement options are some of the reasons why Kimball and his wife, Angie, a 1990 graduate, recommend Alma College to many young adults, including their daughter Lindsay, a sophomore.
While at Alma, he participated in the Jazz Band, intramural sports, Theta Chi Fraternity, Inter-fraternity Council, the Almanian and the radio station. He was also a bagpiper for the Kiltie Dancers and other functions and still plays with the Toronto Police Pipe Band.
