Ashley Masoner

Student Profile: Ashley Masoner

Ashley Masoner couldn't have picked two more different fields of study if she tried. Her passion for physics and theater are perfectly complemented by Alma College's liberal arts approach.

"I have always been interested in physics, even before I knew it was a defined area of science," the senior says. "As for theatre...I just kind of fell into it -- and now I love it so much I can't get out."

Alma's reputation for small classes, as well as excellent physics and theater programs, attracted Masoner all the way from Louisville, Colo.

"Because of the small classes, the professors are able to work with the students at an individual level, tailoring to their specific needs in and outside the classroom," she says.

Her interest in physics stemmed from an interest in fantasy writing, which led to science fiction, astronomy and finally, physics.

In addition to her passion for theater and physics, Masoner also had the chance to study abroad in India.

"I love to travel, and I figured it was the only chance I had to give up everything and go to live in a foreign culture for an extended period of time," she says.

Originally from Scotland, one of the other things that attracted Masoner to Alma was the prevalence of Scottish culture. Masoner has played the bagpipe since her time in Scotland.

Masoner hopes to become a high school physics teacher and run the after-school theatre program. She is involved in theatre, Kappa Iota Sorority, the math honorary and work study at Alma.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ‘07 students explored important cultural sites in China, worked to restore a Jewish Holocaust cemetery in Poland, analyzed ethic politics in Scotland, and studied medieval literature in London.
