Reid Cuddy

Student Profile: Reid Cuddy

Reid Cuddy loves the combination of math and science in physics, and the faculty members in the Physics Department at Alma College are helping him reach his goals.

“Alma has allowed me to learn in the best possible environment,” the Allen Park junior says. “I have never been able to approach any teachers as easily as I have in the Physics Department. Also, they have always been interested in my personal hobbies along with sharing hobbies of their own.”

Cuddy plans to attend graduate school and earn his master's degree in either mechanical or aeronautical engineering. He hopes to obtain a job in the airline industry. This is just one of his dreams that has been encouraged by Alma College faculty.

“Dr. John Gibson organized a staff meeting at Alma College to let me show a video of the campus shot from a radio controlled airplane,” he says. “He also allowed me to give a presentation about radio controlled aircraft to the Amateur Radio Club, which holds meetings at Alma College.”

The math minor came to Alma because of the small campus and friendly atmosphere.

“The smaller atmosphere and classes allow for personal interaction with professors and the best possible learning environment,” he says. “The campus itself has a large number of trees and open spaces of green grass, which makes the walk to class much nicer than any other school I visited.”

Cuddy is involved in Physics Club and is a math tutor.

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.

Amanda Gambino Kilpatrick may not use her physics major every day, but her Alma education gave her an opportunity to pursue a career as a software developer.

“I still am fascinated by physics, and I do use much of the critical thinking and problem-solving strategies that I gained in my studies at Alma,” the 1998 graduate says. “My Alma education helped me to have the discipline and drive to be able to work from home.”
