Faculty Profile: Murray Borrello
Murray Borrello, instructor of geology and director of the Environmental Studies Program, utilizes his interest and expertise to become involved in the community and environment surrounding him. He has provided technical expertise to the local community in developing research and community-based policy regarding the Velsicol superfund sites in St. Louis and the Total/UDS refinery site in Alma. Along with fellow professors and community members, Borrello helped form the Pine River Superfund Citizens Task Force, the largest and most active Community Advisory Group (CAG) in the country.
He has done consulting for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Borrello is the faculty advisor for Students United for Nature (SUN), a student-led, student-oriented environmental group that promotes environmental education, awareness, stewardship and activism.
Borrello has received the College's Barlow Award for Faculty Excellence in 2001 and has received the Outstanding Faculty Award in the Natural Science Division seven times. He obtained his B.A. degree from Albion College and his M.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts.
