Ted Hutchins

Graduate Profile: Ted Hutchins

Ted Hutchins has been interested in computers since middle school, but he says the liberal arts education at Alma College truly prepared him for life.

“At other institutions computer science students have little incentive or ability to further their education in non-science disciplines,” the 1990 graduate says. “Over the years numerous acquaintances have stated they only took those 'other' course to complete their degree. At Alma most of those 'other' classes were the highlight of the term. A well-rounded education furthered my career in ways that are hard to quantify.”

Hutchins, who has worked in the airline industry for 13 years, is currently employed at AirTran Airways in Atlanta, Ga. He graduated with a major in computer science and a minor in religious studies.

“I still remember writing essays for a certain religion professor whose questions always included 'delineate and clarify,' he says. “While going through this experience was not enjoyable, I learned how to articulate persuasive arguments. The ability to think and learn is a better trait than specific knowledge at any age.”

Hutchins was drawn to Alma by various friends who attended the College. He enjoyed the small campus and feeling of community.

He is pursuing his MBA at Purdue University, and hopes to manage a large-scale Information Technology department. While at Alma, he was involved in theater and Phi Mu Alpha.

Alma College is one of the best colleges fostering social responsibility and public service, according to The Princeton Review and Campus Compact. It is one of 81 institutions in 33 states — and the only private college in Michigan — that The Princeton Review commends and features in its book, Colleges With a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement.
