Organic Chemist

Alma College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in organic chemistry beginning Fall 2009. 

Qualifications: Applicants from all areas of organic chemistry are encouraged to apply.  Candidates will be evaluated on their potential as enthusiastic teachers and their promise for developing a student-intensive research program.  Applicants with an interest in interdisciplinary applications are welcomed.  A Ph.D. is required for a tenure-track appointment; Postdoctoral experience is preferred.  Candidates for faculty positions should enjoy teaching a wide variety of courses and be committed to undergraduate liberal arts education, to active pursuit of a research agenda, and to institutional service.

Teaching Responsibilities: The successful applicant will teach the lecture and laboratory portion of Organic Chemistry I and II courses and participate in other course offerings.  Beyond the introductory organic courses, the Department offers an Advanced Organic course, topic courses and First Year Seminar on a rotating schedule.  Other areas of involvement could include CHM 115 (Intoductory Chemistry: Chemical Analysis), CHM 101 (Basic Chemistry), and CHM 103 (Basic Chemical Investigations).  Members of the department are expected to participate in the shared instruction of Senior Seminar during Winter Term.   The normal annual teaching load is four lecture sections and four laboratory sections, or three lecture sections and six laboratory sections.

The Department of Chemistry: The successful applicant will become part of a program of six chemists and one biochemist offering an ACS certified degree.  The curriculum has been revised to respond creatively to ACS certification guidelines and to create opportunities for student participation in research.  The faculty has a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education; creativity in teaching styles; student development in a residential setting; student research; ethical and values dimensions of learning; and interdisciplinary intercultural and international education.  Salaries, benefits and support for professional development are competitive.

Facilities: The Department is housed in excellent facilities.  Laboratories have good ventilation and hood space.  The labs are arranged in suites with adjacent instrumentation labs.  Instrumentation: 300 MHz multinuclear FT-NMR, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, microwave synthesizer, HPLC, IC, AA, UV-VIS, ITC, FPLC and a glovebox.  Workstations support molecular computations and visualization using Spartan and Gaussian.
