How did Alma College prepare you for what you are doing now?

The biology program challenged me to excel in my classes, which prepared me for the rigors of professional school. I gained a wealth of knowledge that I rely on everyday in my current studies. The faculty was always extremely supportive, caring and encouraging. Without them, my preparation would not have been nearly as thorough and practical.

Also, the program opened up many opportunities for me to explore new areas, step out of my comfort zone, and make me a more competitive candidate for professional school, not to mention that the opportunities I engaged in were enjoyable and worthwhile.

What is one of your favorite memories of or experiences with the Alma biology department?

My fond memories lie in just stopping by to chat, both for fun and for advice. The biology faculty was always there for me when I was having a bad day, when I needed help or advice, or when I just needed a good laugh and a smile. I became close with many of my professors and hold a special place in my memories for each and every one of whom I was so lucky to know. I wouldn’t trade these relationships and experiences for any other because they were everything I had hoped they would be.

On another note, the program was flexible and diverse enough that I was able to prepare myself well for veterinary school and tailor the program to my needs. Alma College has a great reputation, and many people recognize the college and it’s integrity and the quality of education students receive. I think this has given me an extra boost in many areas.

FYI, several Alma College students have been through MSU’s program in the last number of years, including Ryan McNally, who is currently a second-year veterinary student.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Biologist John Rowe’s laboratory resembles a turtle zoo.

Children’s wading pools converted into baby turtle habitats are arranged in rows in his darkened lab. Large curtains surround each pool, with lights, some brighter than others, directly overhead. Students maintain the lab, take measurements and analyze data pertaining to the scientific question: Does the intensity of light affect turtles and their shell coloring and growth rates?
