Pamela McCarthy

Graduate Profile: Pamela McCarthy

Pamela McCarthy received a broad background of knowledge in her biology major at Alma College that will allow her to reach her dream of becoming a marine researcher.

McCarthy is working toward her master’s degree in environmental management at Duke University and is looking to pursue ecosystem management planning, someday hoping to perform dolphin research.

“My science training gives me a much more rounded background in terms of future management jobs,” the 2006 graduate says. “I also want to do research in the future, and my biology background will be put to good use.”

Drawn to Alma by the strong biology program, she credits the liberal arts focus of the College for allowing her to receive a great background.

“Alma was definitely tailored to my own interests while still giving me a broad background,” she says. “I got a taste of lab work and field work. I also learned about many organisms and was able to expand my interests for graduate school.”

While at Alma, McCarthy was involved in the chorale, percussion ensemble and Catholic Student Organization, and was president of the biology honorary. She also played soccer for four years.

Alma College is one 240 institutions nationwide — and one of only four Michigan institutions — selected for inclusion in the Colleges of Distinction Guidebook, which profiles institutions that are consistently recognized for quality teaching, the kinds of experiences available to students, and how well students do after they graduate.
