Graduate Profile: Jessica Mosey
Jessica Odette Mosey began her college career focused on medical school, but as Alma's liberal arts education exposed her to various research opportunities she realized her focus had changed.
“After taking a toxicology class, I was hooked on how interesting and complicated the subject was,” the 2006 graduate says. “In retrospect, having an interdisciplinary major in biochemistry made me much more marketable to the real world when it came time to get a job.”
The Menominee native works at Dow Corning Corporation as an associate bioanalytical chemist for the Health and Environmental Sciences Department. She characterizes materials, conducts environmental chemistry studies and provides analytical support for toxicology studies, and is pursuing her master's degree in chemistry at Central Michigan University.
“The lab work at Alma really helps introduce you to labs in the real world,” she says. “I use to laugh about all the emphasis professors put on lab notebooks, but good notebook keeping is everything when it comes to analyzing data and troubleshooting experiments.”
Mosey was attracted to Alma by the small size and interaction with professors.
“I terrified my parents when I only applied to one school, but I knew that Alma was a very good match,” she says. “When I was applying for an internship at other universities, my advisor sat down with me multiple times to help with my resume, essays and write recommendation letters for me. Professors are very active in making sure that students are making real-world connections with their coursework.”
While at Alma, Mosey was a teacher’s assistant and a member of the Creative Writing House, Gamma Phi Beta, the Glee Club and Chorale.
