Joe Beckmann

Biochemistry professor Joe Beckmann could not resist the opportunity to work for Alma College.

Working at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for nine years, Beckmann remembers telling his wife, “There’s more to academics than this.”

“The job description at Alma College fit me perfectly,” he says. “This opportunity was so attractive I had to apply.”

Beckmann is entering his 12th year of teaching and enjoys being involved with the students by balancing lecturing and research mentoring with helping students gain critical thinking skills.

“It’s exceptionally rewarding taking students from a high school level to a graduate school level,” he says. “I only wonder why it took me so long to get here.”

His research interest is in the area of drug metabolism enzymes. In his spare time, he enjoys vegetable gardening, playing the guitar and piano, mechanics, riding horses and spending time with his family.

Alma College is among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions in the country for the percentage of students who choose to study abroad, according to a report published by the Institute for International Education. Among Alma’s graduates in the 2009–10 academic year, 61.4 percent participated in study abroad, which ranked 37th in the nation.

Kelsey Hughes

Kelsey Hughes
Graduation: 2009
Major: Biochemistry

Kelsey Hughes ’09 was attracted to Alma College’s biochemistry program like a proton is attracted to an electron.

“I’ve always sort of been on the border right between chemistry and biology, so biochemistry was the perfect combination of both of my interests,” she says. “Alma also felt right to me. As soon as I set foot on campus, I felt at home. When I visited with professors and students, that feeling was only reinforced.”
