Joe Beckmann

Joe Beckmann

Biochemistry professor Joe Beckmann could not resist the opportunity to work for Alma College.

Working at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for nine years, Beckmann remembers telling his wife, “There’s more to academics than this.”

“The job description at Alma College fit me perfectly,” he says. “This opportunity was so attractive I had to apply.”

Beckmann is entering his 12th year of teaching and enjoys being involved with the students by balancing lecturing and research mentoring with helping students gain critical thinking skills.

“It’s exceptionally rewarding taking students from a high school level to a graduate school level,” he says. “I only wonder why it took me so long to get here.”

His research interest is in the area of drug metabolism enzymes. In his spare time, he enjoys vegetable gardening, playing the guitar and piano, mechanics, riding horses and spending time with his family.

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Graduate Profile

Caleb Woods

Caleb Woods’ opportunity to work closely with faculty while at Alma College was just one tool that set him above his peers in graduate school.

“Because of the hands-on training I received I was able to hit the ground running in my graduate program,” the 2006 graduate says. “There are few peers I know of that left their undergraduate training with as diverse a toolbox as I had.”
