What Can I Do...

What Can I Do With A Major In…Biochemistry?

About one-third of our majors have continued their training toward advanced degrees (MS, Ph.D.) at a variety of graduate schools, including:

  • Michigan State University
  • University of Michigan
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • Mayo Clinic
  • University of Iowa
  • University of Minnesota
  • University of Illinois
  • University of Washington
  • University of Wisconsin
  • University of Delaware
  • University of Massachusetts
  • University of California — Santa Barbara

Other students have pursued health care profession programs, usually attending medical (M.D. or D.O.) schools. An excellent academic record with a biochemistry major appears to enhance the acceptance rate to these programs.

A career in forensic science, which also requires further training, has been another option.

Still other students have been well-prepared to enter the job market directly, and are employed in a variety of sectors, including:

  • Pharmaceutical industries
  • Biotechnology companies
  • Public and private research institutions

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.
