When Allen Park junior Drew Grant isn’t in a good mood, he turns on a hockey game, and it makes all the difference.

“I’m a huge sports guy, and I’ve played sports my entire life,” says the athletic training major. “I love the competitiveness of the game and the closeness of the team.”

Because Grant is not a member of any Alma College sports teams, he is happy to stay involved in sports through his major. Each semester he works with a different team of Scots to help them enhance their athletic performance.

“Working with the athletes, you really get to know them on a personal level, and I like that about athletic training,” he says. “It requires a lot of thinking on your feet, though, because it’s such a comprehensive field.”

Though Grant admits that athletic training is challenging, he has learned to survive with the necessary skills.

“Because you work with a lot of different types of people in this career, a sense of humor and communication skills are needed,” he says. “I feel like I’ve strengthened mine through the program.”

When Grant isn’t in the gym, he enjoys spending time with his fraternity brothers in Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He plans to attend graduate school to become a physical therapist.

More than one-third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region’s premier performing arts facility.

Graduation: 2013
Major: Athletic Training

For an athlete like Hanover senior Kelsee Miles, it wasn’t much of a stretch to major in athletic training.

“I’ve always been involved in athletics, and I always want to be,” she says. “It’s like a puzzle—if someone has an injury, you have to do tests to figure out what’s wrong.”
