Intercollegiate Athletics Participation Policy

Policy On Student Participation In Intercollegiate Athletics

In conjunction with the mission of Alma College and the liberal arts education athletic participation can be a vital part of a student’s collegiate experience. The faculty of the Athletic Training Program and the coaching staff are dedicated to helping the students achieve their goals. However, since the Athletic Training Program has a significant clinical component, conflicts between participation in intercollegiate athletics and the clinical assignment can occur. In order to enable the student to graduate in four years, meet all the requirements for the Athletic Training Program and take the NATABOC certification exam, the following policies are in effect.

Policies

Students admitted to the Athletic Training Program may participate in intercollegiate athletics and it will not be a factor in the admission’s decision.

  • Athletic Training Students shall limit their participation to one intercollegiate team. The ATS is required to continue in a clinical rotation as determined by the Program Director during their participation in an intercollegiate sport.
  • Athletic Training Students who are members of an intercollegiate team will be permitted to participate during their team’s traditional season and may be permitted to participate in the non-traditional season if it does not conflict with the clinical rotation.
  • The Athletic Training Program involves fulfilling many didactic and clinical requirements, which will require early planning if the student participates in intercollegiate athletics. The student is advised to discuss the program with the Director of Athletic Training as early as possible to ensure completion of all the requirements.
  • The competencies of Athletic Training require numerous clinical experiences including an equipment intensive requirement. Athletic Training Students who participate in a fall sport will be required to complete this competency by a) returning for a ninth semester in which they will be assigned to work with football, b) work with an equipment intensive sport during their high school rotation, or c) make another arrangement for an equipment intensive experience with the program director.

Athletic Training Students with questions regarding this policy are encouraged to speak with Denny Griffin MA, ATC, Director of the Athletic Training Program.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. "It's a huge honor," says faculty director Dave Zerbe. "You can't apply to perform there; they seek you out."
