Denny Griffin, MA, ATC

Denny Griffin begins his 27th year at Alma College and is the director for the Athletic Training Education Program. Mr. Griffin earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and physical education from Hope College. He holds a master’s degree from Western Michigan University and is a certified athletic trainer. Denny supervises several Clinical Experiences of the Athletic Training Students and teaches the Administration in Athletic Training course in the Athletic Training major within the Exercise and Health Science Department. He works primarily with women’s volleyball and both the men’s and women’s cross country teams in the fall season. In addition, Denny is in his 21st year at the helm of the Scots' softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. In his 21-year span he has amassed an overall record of 527-171, ranking him third in the list of Winningest Division III Coaches All-time and 17th among Winningest Coaches All-time at an NCAA school by percentage. His teams have won ten conference championships and his last 11 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
He and his wife Tammy, his son Sean, and daughter Erin, reside in Alma.
Phillip Andre, MS, ATC

Phil enters his third year at Alma College as the Director of Clinical Instruction and Assistant Athletic Trainer. He completed his undergraduate degree at The Pennsylvania State University in 2001 and earned his Master of Science in Kinesiology from Michigan State University in 2005. Phil previously worked as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Olivet College and Head Athletic Trainer at East Lansing High School.
Phil teaches Orthopedic Assessment I, two athletic training clinical courses, and the Therapeutic Modalities & Therapeutic Exercise laboratories in the Athletic Training major within the Exercise and Health Science department. Phil primarily works with men’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and baseball programs. He also supervises the clinical experiences of the Athletic Training Students.

Beth Dodson, MA, ATC
Beth enters her third year at Alma College as the Head Athletic Trainer. She completed her undergraduate degree at Albion College in 2005 and Master of Arts in Sport Administration at Central Michigan University in August 2007. Beth served as an Athletic Training Graduate Assistant during her time at CMU, working with the football program and the Injury Care Center.
Beth teaches Principles of Athletic Training, Orthopedic Assessment II, and two athletic training clinical courses in the Athletic Training major within the Exercise and Health Science department. Beth primarily works with the football, women’s basketball, and softball programs. She also supervises the clinical experiences of the Athletic Training Students.

Drew Johnson, MS, ATC

Drew Johnson returns to Alma College as the Exercise and Health Science Lab Coordinator and Assistant Athletic Trainer. She is a 2008 graduate of Alma College where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. She continued her education at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania where she earned her master’s degree in Athletic Training in 2009.
In addition to her certified athletic trainer status, Drew is a Certified American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED instructor as well as a Professional Rescuer. She teaches First Aid/CPR, and two Athletic Training Clinical Education Courses. Furthermore, she also assists the EHS faculty with physiology laboratories. Her primary sport assignments are women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and men’s and women’s track and field. She also supervises the clinical experiences of the Athletic Training students.

Maggie Ross, PA-C
Maggie is in her third year as the Physician Assistant at the Wilcox Medical Center at Alma College. She earned her undergraduate degree from Kenyon College and attended Physician Assistant School at Central Michigan University. She also helps teach units on General Medical Conditions and Public Health.

Amber Herman, RN-ADN
Amber enters her third year as the nurse of the Wilcox Medical Center at Alma College. She earned her degree from Mid-Michigan Community College. She also instructs units on General Medical Conditions and Public Health within the Athletic Training Education Program.

Dr. Gerrit Vanderlugt, DO
Dr. Vanderlugt received his medical degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Kirksville, MO (DO, 1979), and completed his internship at Osteopathic Hospital, South Bend, IN. He is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of General Practice and is the medical director of the Wilcox Medical Center on campus. He has been a team physician for Alma College since 1983 and also acts as a clinical instructor for the Athletic Training Education Program.
