Student Profile: Elizabeth Fishback

EHS student Elizabeth Fishback

Elizabeth Fishback was attracted to Alma not only for the Exercise and Health Science major, but the opportunities to study abroad.

“Besides having a small class size, the labs are small, and students have many opportunities for hands-on experience,” she writes in an e-mail from Australia, where she studied abroad in spring 2008.

“Being able to work in the human cadaver lab for anatomy was also an attraction because not many undergraduate programs have that opportunity,” she says.

The Oregon senior plans to attend graduate school for physical therapy and is considering a career working with geriatric patients.

“I have loved having the opportunity to teach water aerobics for the senior fitness program, and I have also gotten to work with a handicapped woman in the water,” she says. “These types of hands--on experiences are what make the EHS program unique.”

Fishback is a Scottish Highland dancer and competes around the nation. She also is involved in Gamma Phi Beta, Relay for Life, Alma Leadership Alliance, the Kiltie Dancers and Alpha Phi Omega.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
