Integrated Health Studies Institute

A Learning Community for Health

The Integrated Health Studies Institute will help students discover their career interests

Despite an interest in medicine, it can be difficult to decide which area of the field is best for you. The Alma College Integrated Health Studies Institute’s goal is to help you figure that out by giving you the opportunity to explore multiple career choices and majors, including everything from dentistry to health communications.

Don’t be surprised to find yourself falling in love with an area of the medical field that you didn’t even know existed.

While preparing students for medical, graduate or professional school exams, the Institute offers specialized curricular and co-curricular programming. Speakers, mentoring and clinical work give students more intensive and integrative exposure to the breadth of issues faced by professionals in health care delivery, administration, policy and communication.

The Institute’s dedication to career exploration also includes helping students to attain upper-level, meaningful internships or research opportunities both locally and statewide.

While these resources are available to all students interested in the health field, students who want a more intensive experience are encouraged to apply for Institute membership. Completion of the requirements will result in a fellowship designation.

If you have questions regarding the Institute, please contact Director Karen Ball at (989) 463-7127, or Coordinator Cristy Calhoun at (989) 463-7982.

Alma College’s first-year students can choose to “go green” through the Get Out Bike Program, designed to reduce their carbon impact. By signing a pledge not to bring a car to campus, participants in the program receive a bike to keep at a discounted rate. Downtown businesses are easily accessible to student cyclists. Campus also is bordered by the 41-mile Fred Meijer Heartland Trail.
