Reality: What They Don't Teach You in College

This handbook is a collaborative student project researched and complied by students of WST 101: Introduction to Women's Studies in the Fall of 2004. From reading and studying women's issues, the students applied what they learned to what they felt deeply concerned about: sexual assault and college women. They created this information handbook, believing that it will benefit both men and women and wanted to share the information with not only all students at Alma College but also all other people who care about violence against women. The handbook compliments the existing Alma College Quick Guide to Policies, Procedures, and Plans handbook. Women?s Studies Program is proud to make it possible to print out the handbook from its website.

Frank Knox’s accomplishments are extraordinary: From fighting alongside Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders and publishing the Chicago Daily News vice presidential candidate in 1936 to Secretary of the Navy under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Through it all, the 1912 graduate stayed true to his Alma College roots. His portrait adorns the conference room in the Reid-Knox Administration Building.

Graduate Profile

Buddy Scarborough

Buddy Scarborough
Graduation: 2009
Major: Sociology
Minor: Women’s Studies

Prior to an “eye-opening freshman year,” Buddy Scarborough ’09 had never thought about the lived experiences of women. Once he started reading about the concepts of gender and social construction, however, he says he couldn’t get enough.

“The more I learned and understood, the more I wanted to be active in breaking down these constructs,” he says. “I broke down my own perceptions and actions and saw how the things I do on daily basis perpetuate or disintegrate restrictive constructions of gender.”
