Graduate Proifle: Mollie Smith

Mollie Smith can sum up her learning experience from her Women’s Studies minor in one word — perspective.

“This program really opened my eyes to all of the differences that are present in the world,” says the 2007 alumnus. “From unequal pay for the sexes in the work force to understanding what domestication of the public sphere is, the Women’s Studies program at Alma has allowed me to appreciate the changes that have occurred in society, but also has pushed me to help with the progress.”

Smith, a Communication major, will apply this knowledge as she begins a two-year commitment teaching at an inner-city school as part of the Teach for America program.

From unequal pay for the sexes in the work force to understanding what domestication of the public sphere is, the Women’s Studies program at Alma has allowed me to appreciate the changes that have occurred in society, but also has pushed me to help with the progress.

“I spent four years learning feminist and social theories; my profession will allow me to implement the theories into practice on a very broad scale amongst my students,” she says.

The community and a variety of extra-curricular activities drew Smith to the campus, where she was involved in a variety of activities, including Orientation Committee, Greek Life and serving as President of Student Congress. She also co-founded and was president of the Barrister (Pre-Law) Society.

After her commitment to Teach for America, Smith hopes to go into public policy by either attending law school or continuing with a graduate education.

The Corporation for National and Community Service named Alma College to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in both 2008 and 2009 for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
