Alumna Profile: Jennifer Conkey

Jennifer Conkey came to Alma College because of the dance program. Her experience helped her become a dance teacher and assistant director for the Minnetonka Dance Theatre and the school’s annual Nutcracker.
“My dance major has greatly improved my understanding of the dance world,” the 2006 graduate says. “It allowed me to continue to do something that I loved at the level I needed. The supportive community of the Alma College Dance Company and faculty members enhanced my learning and life.”
Conkey also graduated with a mathematics major and computer science minor. She is attending graduate school to become a secondary mathematics teacher. Part of her attraction to the dance program was the ballet instruction.
“The opportunities the dance department had were extraordinary: three performances a year, the ability to choreograph dances, produce a show, work with children, learn about the technical aspects of a show and go on tour,” she says.
“We also were offered the opportunity to work with guest artists,” she says. “The great thing about all of these opportunities is they are available to all because the dance company allows non-dance majors to participate.”
While at Alma, Conkey was involved in the Alma College Dance Company, the climbing club, association of computing machinery, intramural sports and Pi Delta Chi. She also was a resident assistant.
“Alma College gives such great opportunities for its students,” she says. “Through my experiences I have made many life long friends. I look back at my four excellent years there and know I was so lucky to find such a great school.”
