Student Profile: Hillary Bard

Hillary Bard has a variety of interests — music, communication and theatre — but in the end, all of those interests lead her to the same place — Alma College.
Bard originally was interested in Alma College because of her love of music. Once she was dual-enrolled at Alma during high school, she became attracted to the communication program.
But her older sister’s performances in Alma College theatre drove her to try that as well. After grasping a difficult acting technique, she says she was hooked.
“Alma College Theatre has submerged me in all aspects of theatre,” she says.
“At another school I may only have been given the chance to get my pinkie toe wet in acting when what I really want is to be gasping for breath because I’m drowning in directing, acting and playwriting,” she says. “I hope I never dry out.”
The Elwell senior hopes to be an actor, director and playwright. She says she’s confident the breadth of experience she has gained at Alma will prepare her for any of these opportunities.
“Being involved in the arts and Alma College allows you to take part in the New York Arts Program,” the senior theatre major says. “I spent fall term of 2007 in New York as a result. There I studied and had an internship at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. I made many contacts that have allowed me to prepare for my future.”
She is the vice president of Kappa Iota sorority and the assistant producing director for Alpha Psi Omega, the theatre honorary. She also is heavily involved with the MacCurdy House.
