When do words come to life? For Cody Beebe, that magical transformation happens on stage.

“I love the emotion of a script,” he says. “So much passion can come from it, and there are so many interpretive possibilities from all the different people that come together through theatre. That collaboration of ideas is what drew me to theatre.”

The Boyne City sophomore focused on acting and lighting design in high school, but at Alma College, he has had the opportunity to do everything from assist with stage management to act as props master. Beebe admits that these new experiences have been challenging, but help from faculty members and upperclassmen have made each step easier.

“Everyone works with you and takes the time to help you,” he says. “Theatre at Alma is an amazing experience. I’m learning a lot, and it has given me a better understanding of how the theatre works. I can’t wait to work on the technical side of more shows.”

It should come as no surprise that Beebe hopes to work in the theatre world professionally after Alma. His area of focus? Long-time favorite, lighting design.

“I like lighting design because you’re creating an intangible thing and putting it into terms that are tangible,” he says. “It’s a creative outlet for all of your ideas, and the lights can give rhythm to the whole show.”

Frank Knox’s accomplishments are extraordinary: From fighting alongside Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders and publishing the Chicago Daily News vice presidential candidate in 1936 to Secretary of the Navy under Franklin D. Roosevelt. Through it all, the 1912 graduate stayed true to his Alma College roots. His portrait adorns the conference room in the Reid-Knox Administration Building.
