Janelle Young

Student Profile: Janelle Young

What does Janelle Young have in common with Aristotle and Descartes? The Charlotte sophomore enjoys pondering life’s big questions just as much as the world’s greatest philosophers did.

“I came to Alma College wanting to be a music educator, but I found myself leaving my religion class excited,” she says. “I really loved contemplating questions related to religion and the existence of God, and I realized that’s where my passion was.”

With plans to attend seminary after Alma to pursue a career in ministry, Young hopes to soon gain hands-on ministry experience by completing an internship. In the meantime, the religious studies major is a Student Ministry Coordinator for the Alma College Chapel.

“Being a Student Ministry Coordinator is really cool,” she says. “Chaplain Carol Gregg is a mentor to me. She cares about my success in all regards, not just academically. Plus, the job has really pushed me in my ability to organize, plan and delegate tasks, which are all things I wasn’t very good at before I started in the position.”

Young also is involved in the Kiltie Marching Band and Percussion Ensemble. Whether she is in the Chapel, her classrooms or the dining hall, her favorite thing about Alma is the overwhelming sense of community.

“Alma really gives you opportunities to build strong friendships,” she says. “When I am getting a meal, it takes me a while to sit down because I have to chat with everyone. The feeling of community isn’t just limited to the students, though. I can always ask a professor to meet with me and talk about life, and they will. They really care.”

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration—with the assistance of a faculty advisor—to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.
