Bishop Makarios

The Late Reverend Thomas Makarios 

Bishop Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios, founder and leader of the U.S.-Canada Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India, was a much-beloved professor of religious studies at Alma College for 25 years. He passed away February 23, 2008 in Newcastle, England. He was 81. There was a memorial service at Dunning Memorial Chapel on April 6, 2008.

Bishop Markarios was recognized posthumously as the 2008 recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award for the Humanities division.

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Rev. Andrew Pomerville credits Alma College with preparing him for both his graduate studies at Princeton Theological Seminary and his future ministry.

“The history major and religious studies minor gave me ample opportunities to write, study a variety of languages and consider practical approaches to critical research,” says the pastor of Church in the Hills in Bellaire, Mich.
