Anna Stanley

Graduate Profile: Anna Stanley

Anna Stanley is able to view her cases as an attorney from a variety of angles thanks to her double major in philosophy and political science.

“Philosophy taught me to think, to ‘unlock’ thoughts and communicate them effectively, which is very important in the legal profession,” the 2002 graduate says. “Political science gave me a basis for different areas of the philosophy of law. Studying politics, particularly group politics like women’s studies, gave me a lot of theories with which to evaluate case law.”

Philosophy taught me to think, to ‘unlock’ thoughts and communicate them effectively, which is very important in the legal profession.

Stanley is working as an attorney in Chicago. She was attracted to Alma through her brother, Marc, an attorney in Jackson, who sang in the choir. It was the first glimpse she had into the Alma community.

“Alma’s greatest asset is the sense of community,” she says. “I felt like a member of a community with both my philosophy and political science professors, and I trust that students in other programs feel the same way about their professors.”

While at Alma, Stanley was a member of the Alma College Choir, Alma College Democrats and Alma College PRIDE. She also was a student representative for the diversity enhancement team and women’s issues advisory board.

Alma College’s partnership with the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force, an EPA-sanctioned Community Advisory Group (CAG), was selected as a finalist for Michigan’s 2007 Carter Partnership Award. The Task Force is recognized as one of the most influential and active CAGs nationally and as having the largest membership of any CAG in the United States.
