Ted Webb

Student Profile: Ted Webb

When the new media studies major was offered, you didn’t have to tell Ted Webb twice. The Petoskey senior was first in line to sign up.

“At Alma, you can hop right into what you want to do, and do it,” he says. “Dr. Gilbert, especially, encourages me to go for it. She always tells me, ‘If you have time to do it, then do it!’”

Originally a theatre major, Webb has experience in both lighting and sound design. He’s also an enthusiastic photographer, a passion that pushed him to explore documentary film.

“I’m excited about my capstone project—I’ll be making a full-length documentary,” he says. “I want to share it with the public, so I plan to show it to some TV stations after it’s finished.”

Webb, who also will soon begin work on a rush video about his fraternity, Sigma Chi, says he is drawn to the candid nature of documentaries.

“Integrity is my strong point, so I like that documentaries are about truth and research,” he says. “You have to be honest with people. Otherwise, you’re not going to get anything back in life.”

When he isn’t behind the camera lens, Webb also is a member of Alpha Psi Omega. In addition, he’s the technical director for WQAC, where he helped launch the station’s online stream feature.

Alma College’s membership in Phi Beta Kappa is an indication of excellence within the liberal arts. Only 10 percent of colleges and universities in the United States share this distinction. The Phi Beta Kappa Society is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.
