Alejandro Orellana

Student Profile: Alejandro Orellana

Pennsylvania senior Alejandro Orellana’s education at Alma College has been a lesson in expecting the unexpected.

Though he has known he would major in business since eighth grade, not until this year did he decide to add a new media studies major to the mix. He says his newfound interest in graphic design and technology will be useful for a career in advertising.

“New media studies allows me to be creative,” he says. “Business in general isn’t usually a very creative field, but in advertising, you have so much artistic freedom. I get to find my own inspiration and pick the colors, the medium and the music.”

Orellana’s lessons in the unexpected also extend to travel opportunities. He has visited Ecuador through a Spring Term course, Ukraine through a Posey Global Fellowship, and Tennessee and Texas through Alternative Break.

“I never expected to be able to travel to other countries, or even other states, but I’m really glad that I’ve gotten these opportunities,” he says. “I’ve learned so much about other cultures.”

So after Alma, what is he expecting next? Anything is possible. Whatever it is, Orellana is sure that his future is bright.

“My Alma education will give me a leg up in the future, for sure,” he says. “I’ve taken two majors and combined them into something new. This has helped me finally find the career that I want to pursue. It fits me perfectly.”

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term 2012, students observed lizards in Bermuda, studied modern economic development in India, performed dance in Taiwan, examined renewable energy in Europe and investigated medicinal plants in the Amazon rainforest.

When the new media studies major was offered, you didn’t have to tell Ted Webb twice. The Petoskey senior was first in line to sign up.

“At Alma, you can hop right into what you want to do, and do it,” he says. “Dr. Gilbert, especially, encourages me to go for it. She always tells me, ‘If you have time to do it, then do it!’”
