Professor of Music Scott Messing

Scott Messing’s passion for teaching music is apparent to both students and faculty. He’s twice earned the Barlow Award, one of the highest teaching awards at Alma College.

“I have remained at Alma for 26 years because I love the lively and rewarding interactions with our bright and talented students,” the professor of music says.

Messing earned his undergraduate degree in music from Rutgers University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan.

His research specializes in European art music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly reception history. He also authored a two-volume book titled Schubert in the European Imagination about classical composer Franz Schubert.

The Smith Arena, the new addition to the Hogan Center, serves as the primary venue for commencement, convocations, major speakers, concerts, athletics and other major events.
