Andrea Hazen

Student Profile: Andrea Hazen

Andrea Hazen has taken her interest in music and created a program of emphasis in music technology. She hopes to someday work for a multimedia company.

“I love music, but when I came to Alma I was actually thinking of pursuing a business degree,” the Barryton senior says.

“One thing that attracted me to Alma was the fact that non-music majors can take music classes and lessons; you can't do that at a lot of schools.”

Being able to experience some music classes changed my mind about the degree I wanted to pursue and helped me to see my true passion.”

Hazen values the opportunity to work one-on-one with professors, and the small class sizes combined with the equipment she is exposed to will help her in the job market.

I have been able to work very closely with teachers and have been able to get one-on-one help from all of them.

“While at Alma, I have been able to work on several projects that I will be able to turn into a solid portfolio when I graduate,” she says.

“I have been able to work very closely with teachers and have been able to get one-on-one help from all of them. I really enjoy all of my teachers.”

The professional software that Hazen has access to in the studios and computer lab is also providing her with invaluable training.

“Dr. Ray Riley has let me borrow books from his private collection to help me learn all I can about this software and hardware,” she says.

“I am so excited to have had the opportunity to use these things and know that this will help me professionally.”

Hazen is a member of the orchestra and a chamber music group. She also volunteers with her church.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.
