Dr. Tess Miller

Carlos Melendez, flute instructor

Tess Miller is a freelance performer and flute instructor from the mid-Michigan area. She has enjoyed being the flute instructor at Albion College since 2000 and began teaching at Alma College in the Fall of 2008.

In 2004, Dr. Miller received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University, where she studied with Richard Sherman. She has performed in Master Classes for many prominent flutists, including Linda Chesis, Bonita Boyd, Carol Wincenc, Jim Walker, Sebastian Bell and Timothy Hutchins.

In 2006, Dr. Miller was chosen as an alternate for the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition. She is a member of the Traverse Symphony and has freelanced with the Lansing, Jackson, Midland, and Battle Creek Symphony Orchestras.

As a member of the Folias Latin Dance Project, Dr. Miller recently completed a CD recording on the White Pine Music Label; portions of this repertoire were performed at the 2008 National Flute Association Convention in Kansas City. As she enjoys the performance and promotion of chamber music, Dr. Miller is also a member of the Everon Duo (flute and percussion) and the London Trio (two flutes and a cello).

Since 2010, Alma College has added new majors in anthropology, new media studies, biotechnology, health care administration and environmental studies. The College also has completed several campus enhancements, including the Hogan Center, Art Smith Arena, Eddy Music Center and College Corner Coffee and Books.

Dr. Raymond Riley, professor of music at Alma College since 1988, has enjoyed a long and multi-faceted musical career.

Appearing in numerous venues as a recitalist, lecturer, clinician and soloist throughout the Midwest, he believes his piano performance background has been invaluable in supporting his efforts to combine art and science and to foster creativity with technology.
