Dr. Takeshi Abo

Takeshi Abo, strings instructor

Born in Nara, Japan, Takeshi Abo started playing the violin at the age of five. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Kyoto City University of Arts in Japan and continued his study at Michigan State University in 1995. He earned both master’s and the doctoral degrees at MSU.

Dr. Abo is Concertmaster of the Alma, Battle Creek and Midland Symphony Orchestras. He has also played as Concertmaster with a number of orchestras throughout Michigan. An active violinist, Abo has given recitals and concerto performances in Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Dr. Abo has been on the faculty at Interlochen Arts Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. He also served as assistant professor of violin/viola at Central Michigan University. Currently, he is on the faculty at Alma College and Albion College.

His primary teachers include Robert Dan, Joseph Fuchs and Misako Kameda.


 

Bob Devaney, a 1939 graduate of Alma College, went on to become known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate football history. In his 11 years as head coach at Nebraska, Devaney produced 11 winning seasons with two national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981. At Alma he played end and was the Scots’ Most Valuable Player in 1938.

Dr. Nichols conducts the Alma College Choir, the College Chorale and the Women’s Glee Club. Under his leadership the Alma Choirs have become one of the nation’s highly regarded collegiate choral programs.
