Midwest Pipe Band Association: Regional Solo Contest: Feb. 16, 2013

  • Registration is now open for the MWPBA Regional Solos qualifiers. The entry deadline is 15 days before each event. The entry form and full details are available at www.mwpba.org.

Piping & Drumming Clinic: March 23-24, 2013

  • Classes sizes are limited, so please register early. Priority is given based on the order in which registration forms are received.
  • Piping Instructors: Barry Conway, Ken Eller, Bob Worrall
  • Drumming Instructor: Andrew Hoinacki (snare, bass and tenor)
  • Cost: $155 for six class sessions, five meals and snacks. Saturday-only registration is $100. You can also register for individual sessions for $50 per session, which does not include meals.

Color Guard Camp: June 23-29, 2013

  • Classes and sessions will include dance, flag, rifle and saber with the goal of increasing participants’ skill level and performance quality.

  • Cost: $530 if postmarked by April 30, 2013. Late registration is $555.

Drum Major Camp: June 23-29, 2013

  • Classes and sessions will include:
    • Conducting/score analysis
    • Marching and maneuvering, including how to critique movement
    • Field commands
    • Leadership
  • Note: This is a corps style camp. Mace/baton work will not be taught.
  • Cost: $530 if postmarked by April 30, 2013. Late registration is $555.

Percussion Workshops

Week 1: Concert Percussion Workshop: June 16-22, 2013

  • Hands-on sessions cover all facets of contemporary percussion, including timpani with clinician Sal Rabbio, timpanist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 1958–1998, and jazz improvisation with vibraphone clinician Mike Mainieri of Steps Ahead; keyboards; steel drums; Latin percussion; and drum set. Opportunities for hands-on participation are a vital part of the daily schedule. All participants perform in a percussion ensemble, steel drum band and marimba group.
  • Cost: $530 if postmarked by April 30, 2013. Late registration is $555. Commuter cost: $410 if postmarked by April 20, 2013. Late registration is $435. Students can register for both percussion workshops and will receive lodging and activities for June 22.

Week 2: Marching Percussion Workshop: June 23-29, 2013

  • Focus is on fundamental skills of the marching percussion section. Students get hands-on experience playing snare, tenors, bass drum, cymbals and sideline percussion. All students perform in a marching percussion ensemble and will work with guest clinician Dennis DeLucia, DCI legend.
  • Cost: $530 if postmarked by April 30, 2013. Late registration is $555. Commuter cost: $410 if postmarked by April 20, 2013. Late registration is $435. Students can register for both percussion workshops and will receive lodging and activities for June 22.

In the more than 125 years since its founding, Alma College has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, a competitive pipe band and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti…Do! No matter the pitch, Brendan Lodge is hitting all the right notes as a music education major at Alma College.

“I’m really passionate about music,” he says. “I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My biggest goal as a music educator will be to teach people how to love music as much as I do.”
