Student Profile: Erika Sherwood

Spanish student Erika Sherwood

Erika Sherwood grew up hearing various relatives speak Spanish. As a Spanish major, conversing with her family is just one of the many ways she has used the language.

“I would like to spend a couple years as a flight attendant on international flights, and with a degree in Spanish I will have a much better chance at obtaining a job,” the St. Johns senior says.

“Also, I would like to become a nurse. Being bilingual will be helpful because I'll be able to understand just what a patient needs,” she says.

Sherwood was able to use her Spanish skills when she traveled to Ecuador and Peru in the summer of 2008.

“One of the things that was appealing about Alma were the programs abroad,” she says. “My time abroad changed the way I look at my life, the world and the people around me. I feel like a completely different person after experiencing four months abroad.”

She also was attracted to Alma by the small class size and the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities. She is involved in Alpha Xi Delta, union board, soccer, student judicial board, and track and field.

Alma's "green" residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.
