“I´m very excited for the teaching experience at Alma College,” Muesegades says, “and I hope it will be a good preparation for my future career as high school teacher in Germany.”

Muesegades is a student at Kiel University in northern Germany, near the Danish border. His majors are Latin and history, and his interests are Roman and Greek literature and culture, and history of the modern age.

He was born and raised in Hamburg, and says it is interesting to see the differences in social behavior among people in various parts of Germany.

"Even looking at fellow Germans from other parts of the country without prejudice is sometimes hard for people," he says. "To understand and tolerate regional distinctions is one of the supreme disciplines of living together in one state that has been divided for many years."

He also is interested in reading, working with the computer, sports, German and American movies and music.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
