George Brittain

Student Profile: George Brittain

George Brittain '13

Having already traveled to the country twice, George Brittain says what makes it great is “das deutsche Volk”—the people!

The German major spent five weeks in Cologne, where his family knew missionaries who could introduce him to the city and culture. On another trip, he stayed in the small town of Kusel while completing a three-month internship.

“The best part of visiting Germany was getting to know the people there and how they view the world,” says Brittain. “Their ideas of government, marriage, and religion are all different than Americans’, so that was very intriguing.”

“Studying abroad needs to take place for a student to really learn a language,” he says. “The best part about the Alma College language programs is how much they encourage this. I would recommend other students also have a goal in mind when they travel and to stick with the language, so they don’t forget it.”

After graduating from Alma College, Brittain hopes to work for an American correspondence company in Germany.

Alma College is one of the first undergraduate colleges in the United States to belong to the International Criminal Court Student Network (ICCSN). Created in 2006 by students at the London School of Economics, the ICCSN aims to promote the work of the ICC and increase knowledge of international criminal law. Alma joins Duke University School of Law, the University of Cambridge and other institutions in a global community that connects students who share an interest in the ICC.

Dr. Stephany Slaughter
Departments: Spanish

When Stephany Slaughter went to college, she planned to major in French and English with a teaching concentration. But around the time she discovered her college didn’t offer a study aboard program in France, a spot opened up to study abroad in Spain.

“I’ve always been addicted to languages and travel,” the assistant professor of Spanish says, “but the switch from French to Spanish was really accidental. The spot opened up in November, and by January I was in Spain.”
