Major or Teaching Requirements

  1. Thirty-six credits beyond FRN 112 which must include at least four credits from each of these two groups: FRN 301, 371, 372, 377; FRN 350, 354, 355, 356, 360.
  2. Language proficiency must be demonstrated by passing the Diplôme de Langue or the Diplôme Supérieur de Langue.
  3. A minimum of one semester of approved international study in a French speaking country.
  4. Completion of English 200 with a passing grade.
  5. Write an acceptable reflective paper of moderate length and defend it in open forum.

Majors may earn honors in the department by writing a quality senior thesis and defending it in open forum.

Minor or Teaching Requirements

Twenty-four credits in French which includes one upper-level course in civilization or literature; pass the Certificat d’Études de Français Pratique — Degré II (C.E.F.P. II).

Certificat d’Études de Français Pratique — Degré II (C.E.F.P. II), Diplôme de Langue, Diplôme Supérieur de Langue are diplomas certified by the French Ministry of Education (Alma, Nice and Paris).

 

Since 2003, twenty Alma College students have won prestigious national fellowships, scholarships and awards, including 10 Fulbright fellowships and multiple Udall, Truman, Marshall and Gates-Cambridge scholarships.

Scott Casey started studying German in high school and feels fortunate he can continue the opportunity at Alma College.

“I figured I had found a fun and perhaps lucrative skill, so I stuck with it,” the Trenton junior says. “I feel I've benefited greatly from Alma's German program. The curriculum is very interesting to me, and it's helped me to learn a great deal about Germany's language, history and culture.”
