Some people think French is the language of snoots and snobs. Others assume it’s only good for impressing dates. To Holly junior Josh Minshall, the language of love is “100-percent awesome sauce.”

“I’ve been taking French since 10th grade,” he says. “A lot of my friends took Spanish because they thought French would be too hard, but I stuck with it. I feel like I have a real knack for the language, and I speak it every day.”

When the French major arrived at Alma College, his advanced language skills landed him a spot in FRN 321 Composition and Communication, his favorite class so far.

“I didn’t get to do much writing in French in high school, so getting to do that made me way more excited about the French program,” says Minshall. “I’m looking forward to putting my skills to the test when I study abroad.”

The co-president of the French club, Minshall plans to be a French teaching assistant. Already a brother to Kappa Iota, he also has pledged to Theta Chi.

“I’m thrilled I decided to rush,” he says. &lddquo;I thought being in a fraternity would be awful, just like it is in movies, but I’ve already made friends that will last a lifetime.”

Alma College students have experiential learning opportunities in Washington, D.C. and around the world through the College’s partnership with the Osgood Center for International Studies. The Osgood Center offers annual leadership, business and foreign policy conferences for college students on contemporary international issues.

Learning another language is valuable in itself, but experiences abroad can bring words and meanings to life. Alma College alumna Kelly O’Connor Dachtler was drawn to studying German because of her experiences studying aboard.

“I was able to study for a semester in Germany as part of my double major,” she says. “In addition to developing my language skills in a tremendous way, the cultural immersion opened my eyes to the world.”
