Elizabeth Heitsch

Student Profile: Elizabeth Heitsch

Elizabeth Heitsch came to love the French language for its beauty, but she knows she can use it in a variety of practical applications as well.

“The French program, and especially the opportunity study in France, has allowed me to learn another language and broaden my understanding as an individual,” the St. Louis senior says.

Heitsch studied in France from Feb. to May of 2007, learning about art history and contemporary France in addition to honing her French language skills. In addition, she had the opportunity to travel around France and Italy.

“I learned that people are people all over the world,” she says. “As an abstract concept, I knew that before, but being there and interacting with the other students from all corners of the world, I saw it for myself. Everyone had the same sorts of problems and hopes and dreams. Race and nationality become irrelevant.”

I learned that people are people all over the world. As an abstract concept, I knew that before, but being there and interacting with the other students from all corners of the world, I saw it for myself.

Drawn to Alma College because of its reputation of excellence, she feels as though the opportunity to study abroad has allowed her a new insight into the world.

“A language minor has allowed me to travel France and spend a term in Paris, leaning about language and culture,” she says. “This has not only improved my language skills, but has also increased my understanding of myself as a member of a global community. In addition, I was able to learn about history in a place where it actually happened.”

After her time at Alma, Heitsch says she plans to pursue her master’s in Library Science and would like to be a librarian for a university. She works at the College library and participates on the College Bowl team.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
