Study Abroad Requirement

To become competitive with other non-native speakers of second languages, Alma College requires all language majors to spend a semester of study in a country or region where the target language is spoken. Many minors elect to study overseas as well, though it is not required. The Department of Modern Languages currently approves the following study abroad programs for students of French. These and other options are under regular review.

  1. Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) in Paris (for Critical Studies), Rennes, or Dakar, Senegal.

  2. School for International Training (SIT) in Toulouse, France, for the following emphases:

    • a. Cultural Integration and the New Europe.
    • b. Intensive Language and Culture.
  3. Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) in Nantes or Paris, with a choice of emphases.

  4. The American University Center of Provence has two programs with a choice of emphases.

  5. AHA International in Angers, France.

Alma College’s nationally recognized Model United Nations program has won top honors for 16 consecutive years (1997–2012) — the longest active winning streak of any college or university in the nation. Alma College’s all-time 30 “outstanding delegation” awards are the most of any college or university in the 90-year history of the conference.

Kelly O’Connor Dachtler
Graduation: 2005
Major: German

Learning another language is valuable in itself, but experiences abroad can bring words and meanings to life. Alma College alumna Kelly O’Connor Dachtler was drawn to studying German because of her experiences studying aboard.

“I was able to study for a semester in Germany as part of my double major,” she says. “In addition to developing my language skills in a tremendous way, the cultural immersion opened my eyes to the world.”
