Invitation for Information Fair--Campus organizations

Invitation for Information Fair--Campus Organizations

We invite campus organizations (and individuals) with connections to Latin American or Hispanic cultures to participate in  an Information Fair to be held during our "Bicentenario in Michigan: Exchanges Between Michigan and the Americas" launch event on Friday, September 17th, 2010. Our tentative plans for this event (subject to change) include: welcomes beginning at 3:00pm, followed by a mariachi performance. The Information Fair, along with Zumba demonstrations and dance lessons, will immediately follow and end at 5:00p.m for a dinner recess. Activities will resume at 7:00p.m. when Consul Vicente Sanchez Ventura of the Mexican Consulate in Detroit will give "El Grito de Independencia" to commence the Baile Latino, which will last until 11:00 p.m.

For the Information Fair portion of this event, we ask that you create a poster that reflects what your organization does, the role you assume in the Michigan community, and your connection with Hispanic heritage. The posters will be displayed or hung beginning the morning of the 17th through the end of the Baile Latino. We also encourage you to send a representative of your organization to be available for questions/answers during the events and welcome any appropriate handouts you would like to be distributed where you poster is displayed. Each organization is responsible for provided their own leaflet copies. As we have limited table and wall space, however, it will be allotted on a first come, first serve basis.

In order to reserve space for your organization, please send an email to bicentenario.almacollege@gmail.com that indicates your interest in participation, NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 10th. Please also include a brief description of your organization (if possible, we request this information in both English and Spanish), contact information (including email and telephone number), and how you plan to participate in the Information Fair (poster size, type--wall or free-standing, handouts, representatives, etc.). Once your position has been confirmed, you may deliver your poster and leaflet samples to Dr. Stephany Slaughter (SAC 346). Materials may also be delivered to the Provost's Office on the first floor of the Swanson Academic Center (SAC).  All resources must be received by Dr. Slaugher NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14.

Student Profile

Elizabeth Curtiss

Elizabeth Curtiss
Graduation: 2015
Major: Spanish and Biology

Saginaw sophomore Elizabeth Curtiss isn’t just taking notes about biology concepts at Alma College. Through her gene and cancer research with Eric Calhoun, assistant professor of biology, she is working with the real thing.

“If I’m having a bad day, I love going to the lab and focusing on this one thing I really, really enjoy for a few hours,” she says. “Learning about biology is so interesting to me, and I learn even more when the concept is right in front of me in the lab.”

Curtiss hopes to combine this passion with her love of her other major, Spanish, into a career as a bilingual physician.
