Dr. Lisa Knowles

Graduate Profile: Dr. Lisa Knowles

Lisa Knowles took an unexpected path with her communication major when she pursued dental school at the University of Michigan.

A biochemistry minor, Knowles planned to attend dental school or be a sports broadcaster.

“The admissions representatives at the University of Michigan said they looked for a well-balanced person and liked that I had a liberal arts education behind me,” the 1994 graduate says. “Today, in my profession, my liberal arts background gets used daily: I can converse with all types of people on a variety of topics.”

"Today, in my profession, my liberal arts background gets used daily: I can converse with all types of people on a variety of topics."

Knowles is an Alma native, and enjoyed the opportunity to get involved in campus activities while still being involved with her family.

“I truly believe working for what you want and getting exposure to different difficult situations is a great way to further one’s personal development,” she says. “I can truly say that I got an amazing, well-rounded education at Alma, but it is because I chose to get involved.”

While at Alma, she played softball and JV basketball and was a resident assistant. In addition, she was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, the communication honorary, the Women's Issues Advisory Board and the Leadership Honor Society.

Alma is one of only 100 colleges and universities to be named to the Templeton Honor Roll in the Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character Development.
